Performer Notes
  • The archetypal American folk group, the Weavers provided the launching pad for the solo career of Pete Seeger, but their own place in history is assured by their 1940s/'50s work. The leftist, protest-song folkie template that would become a near stereotype decades later was a very real and vital concept when the Weavers were busy getting blacklisted. WEAVERS CLASSICS is not a greatest-hits collection per se (chestnuts like "Goodnight Irene" are not found here), but true to its title, it's got a batch of their best from their salad days, with Seeger's plangent banjo-picking supporting the group's rousing four-part vocals.
