Raphael Saadiq continues a streak of throwback-oriented releases with Stone Rollin', his late-`60s/early-`70s soul-inspired fourth studio album. Saadiq says he provided 90 percent of the instrumentation and wrote the same percentage of the material, with assists coming from a handful of artists he admires, including Little Dragon's Yukimi Nagano and Earth, Wind & Fire's Larry Dunn -- both of whom appear on "Just Don't."
Rolling Stone (p.67) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Saadiq holds it together with tight songwriting, and he ups the urgency with garage-rock production that suggests a White Stripes fan."
Rolling Stone (p.74) - Ranked #44 in Rolling Stone's '50 Best Albums Of 2011' -- "This retro-soul master segues from 1960s Motown to Fifties R&B to Seventies psychedelic soul."
Spin (p.80) - "[Saadiq is] a virtuoso stylist whose finest flourishes lie in the details."
Entertainment Weekly (p.63) - "Horns soar as he charms on 'Movin' Down the Line,' and a bluesy harmonica wails next to a funky guitar riff throughout the lady-lauding title track." -- GRade: B+
Uncut (p.31) - Ranked #41 in Uncut's '50 Best Albums Of 2011' -- "[H]is metier remained consummate, inspiring soul revivalism."
