Performer Notes
  • Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is a Qawwali singer of Pakistani devotional songs; this recording was a departure for him, a collaboration with artists from many different disciplines.
  • Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is widely acknowledged as the greatest master of qawwali music, the devotional music of the Sufis. Having popularized this beautiful and inspirational music with a worldwide audience, he began traversing a whole new musical territory towards the end of his life. MUSTT MUSTT is probably the singer's most successful endeavor at reaching out beyond the boundaries of traditional qawwali.
  • The title track draws upon various devotional lyrics about a particular Sufi saint which Nusrat uses as a springboard for a melodically compelling vocal solo; in contrast, "Tery Bina" is a romantic qawwali song. Use of drum programming (by Peter Gabriel), synthesizers, and other modern instrumentation makes for a compelling listen. Overall, MUSTT MUSTT has a feel akin to some of Gabriel's own attempts at blending Western sounds with qawwali.
Professional Reviews
