Originally issued in the late 1950s, A MAN AIN'T SUPPOSED TO CRY finds the revered jazz vocalist Joe Williams easing into a set of beautifully lovelorn tunes. The lush orchestral arrangements perfectly complement Williams's deep, wistful vocals, which relate one heartbreaking tale after another, including "I'll Never Smile Again," "I've Only Myself to Blame," and "You've Got Me Crying Again." With its wonderfully sustained mood and excellent performances, this is a fine addition to any '50s jazz/pop-vocal collection.
