Performer Notes
  • While touring with Belle & Sebastian, Stuart Murdoch began writing songs for a separate project. The songs revolved around the travails of a girl growing up in Scotland who ends up being hospitalized for what seems like a mental breakdown. He auditioned female vocalists and began putting the music on tape. The album sounds much like a B&S album, and as good as the female singers are, the record works best when Stuart takes the vocals himself, as on "Pretty Eve in the Tub" or "Hiding Neath My Umbrella."
Professional Reviews
Spin (p.84) - "GOD HELP THE GIRL feels like one of those projects Prince masterminded in the '80s....Brilliantly classic-sounding songs..."

Q (Magazine) (p.128) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Catherine Ireton shines...her clipped enunciation adding an air of well-heeled sophistication to the lightly orchestrated songs."

Pitchfork (Website) - "Murdoch lands on solid ground again with GOD HELP THE GIRL, which has catchy, jangling girl-group ditties a plenty [and] a theatrical flourish thanks to Belle and Sebastian trumpeter Mike Cooke's orchestral arrangements..."

Record Collector (magazine) (p.87) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It's an expansive, eclectic set of classic pop, with nods to Dusty Springfield, Love, Phil Spector, Motown and The Zombies."
