The Vital and Health Statistics Series, or what documents and medical librarians call The Rainbow Series, includes four series published by the U.S. National Health Survey between 1958 and 1963, and eighteen series published by the National Center for Health Statistics since 1963. Walsh and Bothmer list, annotate, and index all of the 853 reports published.
JIM WALSH is Head of Government Documents and Microforms at the O'Neill Library, Boston College. He is the author of Maps Contained in the Publications of the American Bibliography, 1639-1819: An Index and Checklist (1988).
A. JAMES BOTHMER is Associate Director for Public Services, McGoogan Library, University of Nebraska Medical Center.
?The "Rainbow Series," so called because each numbered series bears
covers of a distinct color, consists of more than 800 reports
issued since 1958 in 4 series by the National Health Survey, and 16
series by the National Center for Health Statistics. The reports
include vital statistics (birth, death, marriage, and divorce) and
health statistics. Walsh and Bothmer's checklist includes an entry
for each report, providing bibliographic, cataloging, and
availability information, and an abstract. There are separate
author, title, and subject indexes. Listings in the subject index
are not always sufficiently subdivided: there are 76
undifferentiated entries under "Hospital Utilization." Recommended
for medical and public health collections, and for any library
owning many of the "Rainbow Series" reports.?-Choice
