Reviews

May 06 Nancy J. Martin started quilting in 1976 when specialist shops for patchworkers were few and far between. Today most scrap quilts are a mixture of saved and specially purchased material. Nancy suggests that a fabric recipe will help produce a pleasing quilt. Collect all your blues for example. You won't need all of them but it will help make a decision, then buy fabric to fill any colour gaps...Each projects has a full colour illustration, clear instructions, templates when needed and an alternative colour picture. I feel that this book will be very useful to people who are fairly new to quilting. It is written in a logical way and people will be able to make the projects and be pleased with their efforts.

Issue 156, Jan 07 Nancy Martin, the well-known American quilt maker and author, shares her great experience with her readers. The introduction is full of helpful suggestions for colour choices; her scrap quilts are carefully planned, not random. She gives her 'colour recipes' and has scrap cutting strategies to add variety to the quilts. The quilt basics are clearly explained with good diagrams, there are even tips for pinning a quilt sandwich with safety pins. Her favourite quilt binding is made from bias strips becuase it rolls over the edges nicely and stands up to hard wear. Most of the eighteen quilts are rotary cut traditional blocks but some feature simple appliqué shapes and there is one quilt with curved seam blocks. Each quilt has an alternate colour scheme. This is a reliable guide for any quilt maker.
