It is Caerphilly in 1645 and 10-year old Tirion Griffiths arrives
to work at Llancaiach Fawr Manor only to find that her main duty is
to be the ‘spider-brusher’ for the Mistress, which was not quite
what an educated girl like her was expecting.
By reading her secret journal we share in her innermost thoughts
and feelings as she goes about her mundane tasks, culminating in
the highlight of the King’s visit to her Master’s house – an
important turning point for the spirited Tirion.
The pacy narrative brings history alive in an entertaining way. We
also learn some important lessons about facing one’s fears and
pursuing one’s ambitions whilst still helping others - even those
who are difficult to understand, like irritating Ifor!
Lively and informative footnotes provide a vital background history
to the Stuart period and a fascinating insight into the society of
the times, as well as explaining the origins of sayings, beliefs
and legends of the past.
This book is an ideal companion to anyone’s visit to the Manor, but
it is especially enriching as an educational resource – far more
illuminating than the dreaded worksheet!
