While other books cover puppy behavior in one or two chapters, Randolph uses her entire text to document puppy development during the first year. Topics include obedience, socialization, housebreaking, feeding, and training. Such in-depth treatment offers much needed guidance for pet owners, and Randolph's understanding analysis of common problems provides good suggestions. This commonsensical guide to the physical and behavioral development of puppies will teach owners how to effectively handle canine housebreaking, aggression, territorialism, increased sexuality, public leash walking, immoderate barking, chewing and biting, as well as how to effect proper car etiquette and ``table manners.'' Randolph ( Your Pet's Complete Record Book, etc.) and animal behaviorist Hamilton guide readers through the decision-making process of dog adoption by encouraging self-examination: ``Are you willing and able to take proper care of a puppy?'' ``Why do you want a dog?'' ``What do you want your dog to be like?'' Instructions for preventive medicine, grooming, feeding and exercise are detailed. Charts provide helpful comparisons by breed on coat care, problem behavior and physical disorders.
