For 14 year old Walter (Haley Joel Osment), the thought of spending summer with his two crazy old great uncles on their farm in rural Texas fills him with dread. Eccentric and gruff, Hub and Garth McCann (Robert Duvall and Michael Caine) are rumoured to have been bank robbers, Mafia hit men and war criminals in their younger days. However, this summer Walter finds the truth of how the two unlikely heroes lived an adventure most people only dream of.
Synopsis
It's the Summer of 1960 and introverted 14 year old, Walter, is unceremoniously dumped by his single mother, Mae, at the Texan farm of eccentric great uncles, Hub and Garth. Walter has never met them before, but legend has it, they were bank robbers, mafia hitmen - even Nazi war criminals. Whatever their past, one rumour is the most compelling to Mae: Hub and Garth have lots of money stashed away. So find the dough, she commands. But that is the least of Walter's worries. Hub and Garth aren't exactly the welcoming types and suddenly it looks like it's going to be a long, hard Summer. That is, until Walter stumbles upon a photo in an old trunk of a beautiful, exotic woman. And when he confronts Garth about it, his uncle reveals a past of incredibly exciting and daring experiences. True or not, Walter soon finds himself discovering his own sense of adventure, his own kind of happiness and life suddenly looks promising after all.

I cant believe that this movie was not seen on big screen. I loved this movie about a kid who goes and stays with his uncles for the summer vaction and uncovers alot of their passed life and finds out that they were rumoured to have been bank robbers, hit men and war criminals. But what he uncovers is a wonderful adventure of action and love. This is a aswsome movie the younge boys also gets a lion who lives her days out on the farm.
I've rarely seena movie that manages to be sweet and honest at the same time -- this movie is one. It's not all smiles and happy endings, but there sure is a hell of a lot of fun to be had along the way. I rented this movie without really knowing what it was about, and it turned out to be one of the best feelgood movies I have ever seen.
A feel-good movie to the core, Second-hand Lions is about a boy whose mother is a flirt and can never stick with the same man, or job, for long. She drops him off with his two great-uncles so she can do her own thing without him in the way. The great-uncles initially are not over enthusiastic about the idea, but gradually warm up to him. He is caught up in the adventure of who they once were, the stories (are they real, or are they not?) filling his imagination with swords and gold, arabian princesses and daring rescues. The movie's end felt just right, a movie to watch again and again
