First volume of a brilliant new fantasy trilogy: the most powerful, original and absorbing new epic since Stephen Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. The first volume of George R R Martin's glorious high fantasy tells the tragic story of treachery, greed and war that threatens the unity of the Seven Kingdoms south of the Wall. Martin unfolds with astonishing skill a tale of truly epic dimensions, thronged with memorable characters, a story of treachery and ambition, love and magic. Set in a fabulous world scarred by battle and catastrophe over 8000 years of recorded history, it tells of the deeds of men and women locked in the deadliest of conflicts and the terrible legacy they will leave their children. In the game of thrones, you win or you die. And in the bitter-cold, unliving lands beyond the Wall, a terrible winter gathers and the others -- the undead, the neverborn, wildlings to whom the threat of the sword is nothing -- make ready to descend on the realms of men. A Game of Thrones begins the most imaginative, ambitious and compelling fantasy epic since The Lord of the Rings. Thronged with memorable characters, it unfolds with astonishing skill a tale of truly epic dimensions. There have been many pretenders to the throne of Tolkien: now at last he has a true heir.

Reviews

The author of such sf classics as The Armageddon Rag (1983) marks the beginning of a new fantasy series about a world where the summer and winter seasons can span generations.

'A Game of Thrones grabs hold and won't let go. It's brilliant.' Robert Jordan 'Such a splendid tale. I couldn't stop till I'd finished and it was dawn.' Anne McCaffrey 'Colossal, staggering... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world... one of the greats of fantasy literature.' SFX 'Fantasy literature has never shied away from grandeur, but the sheer-mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias.' Guardian

The first installment in the engrossing fantasy epic series, A Song of Ice and Fire, opens on a rigid feudal society in a world where the seasons are unpredictable-pleasant summers can last a decade and cruel winters could be scores of years long-creating a hardened and durable people. Up against the ice wall that separates the barbarians and mysterious wild things from civilization, the Stark family has held the north for generations. As the King's Hand, Stark must protect the king whose enemies covet the throne, and the most dangerous of these might be the queen and her family, the Lanisters. While the intricate, compelling story is told in many voices from many perspectives, Tony and Emmy award-winning narrator Roy Dotrice doesn't attempt to perform each of the hundreds of characters. Only occasionally using a different accent or intensity, the tale unfolds in the gruff voice of an old master storyteller enthralling an audience at a hearth. With his British accent and straightforward narration, Dotrice adds a ominous sense of intrigue and doom to the dark and fascinating tale. A Bantam paperback. (Apr.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. 5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 19/11/2009

Definitely the 1st of a serious of books that you won't be able to put down. I enjoyed it immensley and was instantly enthralled with the plots, because there's more than just one. I loved how ther's just not a single main charcater as such. It is definitely a story about a lot of people and how they are all connected somewhere, somwhow. The best thing Mr. Martin did was not to make the plots obvious at all. You will be surprised and most often than not shocked. Definitely the best read for me so far.

An utterly compelling read. Well-drawn, strong - though not always - likeable characters and excellent pacing.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 28/06/2009

I'd been thinking about reading this book for quite sometime before I actually picked it up. It really didn't take me long to read it because it really one of those books that you just can't put down.

The story is very well crafted and moves through several characters. The book keeps you hooked as he regularly switches just as as significant event occurs for a character. It becomes tempting just to skip ahead and follow the character, but then if you do that you'll miss important points in the story line.

It's an addictive fantasy story and without a doubt the best book I've read for quite some time.

A Game of Thrones
The first book in this series is one of the best books that I have ever read. From early in the book the reader will realize that this is not the average fantasy book. Indeed this is unlike most of the books in any genre. The power of the book comes from the fact that the author doesn't flinch away from portraying the world in all its gritty detail as it would be as if it were a real place. It come from the fact that the author realizes that the good guy don't always win. An excellent start to an excellent series.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 27/03/2007

This book was breathtaking from the go. With an unlimited imagination only an author like George R R Martin could have produced. Concentration and memory are strict essentials while reading this book, because of its extensive character list and a history of each of their bloodlines spanning over centuries.

The whole series is a definite MUST read for any fantasy novel fan!

4 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 10/03/2006

A fascinating first installment. Filled with a huge cast of characters, it is often hard to keep track of all their separate adventures. The plot and backdrop is set out in huge detail transporting the reader instantly to that time period. Full of political and deadly intrigue. The combat scenes are well crafted and brutal. Skillfully plotted and solidly paced. This is the start of an ambitious series bound for epic proportions.

This is one of the best books I've ever read, and I have several friends who have never read novels but decided they liked reading after this book. Characters that will make you laugh and cry and become sympathetic for. I seriously adore this book!!
