  • To a small but hardy fanbase, the Bongos were to Hoboken what the Beatles were to Liverpool. Fronted by McCartneyesque singer-songwriter Richard Barone, the band filtered British '60s pop and '70s glam (see the cover of T. Rex's "Mambo Sun") through a distinctly early-1980s powerpop/new wave sensibility. Their debut album, DRUMS ALONG THE HUDSON, remains their finest moment, bursting with youthful exuberance, irresistible hooks, and a touch of mystery via Barone's elliptical lyrics and atmospheric e-bow guitar lines.
Professional Reviews
Spin (p.96) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Their 1982 debut is a beauty, and 11 bonus tracks magnify the band's closet weirdness..."

Uncut (p.81) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Songs like 'Zebra Club' and a cover of T.Rex's 'Mambo Sun' are nervy and lyrically oblique like Byrne and co, but melodic in a sweeter, more straightforward manner."
