Performer Notes
  • Clem Snide includes: Eef Barzelay (vocals, guitar); Jason Glasser (violin, cello, keyboards, electric bass, samples, background vocals); Jeff Marshall (upright & electric bass); Brad Reitz (drums).
  • Additional personnel includes: Mary Rowell (violin); Irene Glasser (bassoon); Andy Hollander (keyboards); Phil Hernandes (percussion); Mary Olive Smith, Ambrosia Parsley (background vocals).
  • Named after the predatory hallucination of a private eye that pops up throughout William Burroughs' writing, Clem Snide are literate shoegazers with an uncanny ability to turn pedestrian chords and imagery into sublime urban insight. Singer/guitarist/lyricist Eef Barzelay's songs continually gather off-kilter insights through small details.
  • Tracks about a white woman's black boyfriend ("African Friend"), an unhealthy Christ fixation ("Messiah Complex Blues"), and the need to jump into the void ("I Love the Unknown") are fired off with imagery and vigor. Jeff Marshall's double bass and Jason Glosser's cello frame these ruminations with eerie Gothic touches. When this creepy playing hits its mournful stride and coalesces with one of Barzalay's more vague and poetic lyrics, as on the excellent "Loneliness Finds Her Own Way," Snide resemble both modern Lower East Side midnight cowboy psychologists and the latest in the line of New York's high-IQ six-string prophets.
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (4/27/00, pp.73-4) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Thoroughly modern country progressives....They're either lonely in their irony or ironic about their loneliness: To slow strumming and mournful cello..."

Q (4/01, p.98) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Soporific certainly, but full of a rare quality that makes it quite wonderful."

Magnet (6-7/00, pp.73-4) - "...These are slow, sad, sensitive alt-country songs by a man who spends too much time lying on the couch....But he writes beautiful 3-chord melodies that are as touching as they are simple..."

CMJ (5/00, p.53) - "...The in the countrified pop corner of the indie rock world, but range from the criminally the more typically which [Eef] Barzelay reels off so many clever lines he could be a comedian..."

Mojo (Publisher) (3/01, p.94) - "...Clearly steeped in a tradition of country miserablism, YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC is sharper and more knowing than the usual alt country tales of lost love and dirty boots..."
