  • In 2004, Light in the Attic Records released Wheedle's Groove: Seattle's Finest in Funk & Soul 1965-75, a compilation of deftly curated, hyper-obscure vintage funk sides lost in the shuffle of independent music from Seattle's vibrant scene. Ten years later, the second volume of the heavy-hitting crate-digging series arrived, showcasing 18 largely forgotten but entirely vital tunes from the Seattle area made as funk and soul transitioned into the disco era and beyond -- from 1972 to 1987. Almost every cut that makes up this compilation of unknown groovers is a winner, with pseudo-Prince sounds and era-appropriate robo-funk from 1983's Teleclere, breezy disco funk from Steppin' Stones, and a plethora of wide-spanning gospel, funk, and proto-electro sounds chronicling the hidden history of Northwestern soul music. ~ Fred Thomas
