  • Bluegrass stalwart Peter Rowan's 1981 album is an all-star affair; at least half the backing musicians are essentially the tops on their respective instruments, and if you haven't gotten your daily dose of that high lonesome sound, you won't go wrong with this. In fact, if you can listen to the harmonies on "Going Up on the Mountain" or the picking on "Thirsty in the Rain" without the hair on the back of your neck going up, you probably need medical attention. Don't miss two great ringers: "Plains of Waterloo," a folk song that predates bluegrass by about 100 years, and "Hiroshima Mon Amour," history's first-ever bluegrass protest song to be named after an impenetrable French New Wave film of the early '60s.
