  • RCA Victor's 2002 The Very Best of James Galway is a comprehensive overview of James Galway's prolific career, touching not only on his easy listening pop crossover tunes, but his classical pieces. In fact, it does something very clever: it devotes a disc, a full half of the collection, to his classical works, with the second disc to his smooth, lovely covers of pop hits. This way, the full scope of Galway's talents are showcased on one compilation, but they're also kept separated, so you can hear one side or the other, depending on mood. Some may find a certain favorite or two missing, but overall, this is an excellent summation of Galway's RCA recordings, which did find him at a peak. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Jimmy on
James Galway is a genius. Bottom line, probably the most famous flautist in history and one of the first to make a career playing solo. Listen to this and you'll realise why. The flute is now one of the most popular and well enjoyed instruments in the world. At 70 years of age he is still sounding as good as ever!
