  • Photographer: Francis Wolff.
  • Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Thelonious Monk are all widely recognized as bebop pioneers, yet piano genius Bud Powell is sometimes neglected by many but the most devout jazz aficionados. One listen to "Bouncing with Bud," however, the lead-off track of Blue Note's THE VERY BEST, should remind listeners that Powell had the technical range, velocity, and improvisatory imagination of Parker and Gillespie, while maintaining a singularly expressive voice in the same league as Monk's. Additionally, Powell was a first-rate bop composer (he wrote all but two of THE BEST OF's 11 tracks).
  • Powell sounds dynamite in expanded combos (on "Bouncing with Bud," for example, he is complemented by Sonny Rollins on saxophone, Fats Navarro on trumpet, Tommy Potter on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums), but he truly shines in a trio setting. On the lush, whimsical "Parisian Thoroughfare," Powell articulates long, dizzying lines as lyrical and elegant as the Champs-Elysees, while Curly Russell and Max Roach (on bass and drums, respectively) create a percolating backdrop. The slightly schizophrenic, Latin-tinged "Un Poco Loco" is another trio highlight, as is the sweeping version of "Autumn in New York" with its overlapping piano lines and orchestral voicings. THE BEST OF puts Powell where he belongs: among the best.
