  • As one of the most commercially successful groups in the underground world of latter-day prog-rock, Spock's Beard did more than any other band to raise the genre's profile in the '90s. The fivesome's first effort of the 21st century finds them at the peak of their powers, and might just be their strongest recording to date. Bandleader Neal Morse shows considerable self-production skills, achieving a lush, thick sound for the band's wide array of tonal colors.
  • V opens with all guns blazing on the mammoth "At the End of the Day," where bright vocal harmonies, polyrhythms, and dexterous fretwork are all called into play. "Revelation" alternates between dreamy, Pink Floyd soundscapes and crunching prog-metal riffs. "All on a Sunday" is a Beatles-esque pop-rocker with shades of the Moody Blues. The closing track "The Great Nothing," clocking in at over 27 minutes, utilizes prog's time-tested suite form, moving through six discrete sections. It's the stuff prog fans' dreams are made of, as it glides from early Genesis-like sonic tapestries to crushing, angular King Crimson-ish riffs, Rush-style storytelling, and vintage Kansas power-prog maneuvers. Somehow, Spock's Beard manages to assimilate all these influences and emerge with the individual sound that propels their work throughout V.
Professional Reviews
Mojo (Publisher) (10/00, p.112) - "...Sees the band overlaying '70s English prog rock with shiny West Coast AOR....A masterpiece? Only if you've never heard Yes, Genesis or even Kansas."
