Performer Notes
  • My Morning Jacket: Jim James, Johnny Quaid, J. Glenn, Two Tone Tommy.
  • Personnel: Jim James (vocals, guitar); J. Glenn (drums).
  • My Morning Jacket is a four-piece band from Louisville, KY, led by singer/songwriter Jim James. The songs on Tennessee Fire (Darla 1999) evoke warm (and somewhat lonely) memories of a gothic country night. Electric and acoustic guitars, harmonica, lap-steel, drums and bass all join his unique (Neil Young meets Wayne Coyne) voice in a huge pool of reverb. At first you wonder if the sound will overtake the songs, but after the first chorus you realize that the beauty of these simple and emotive songs is only enhanced by the addition of this effect, and by the end of the first song, you can't even tell that it's there. Released to (world) wide critical acclaim, Tennessee Fire provides proof (200 proof) that heartfelt American music is alive and well, and living in KY. A must for anyone who loves the sound of alt-country mixed with wide-open spaces. ~ Terrance Miles
Professional Reviews
Uncut (3/03, p.97) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...[THE TENNESSEE FIRE] kicked over a welter of traces in dazzling style....James' soulful, inflamed howl is enough to crack open a marble moon..."

Alternative Press (11/99, p.112) - 3 out of 5 - "...makes you want to stir up a Kentucky Cocktail and sit on the front porch to watch the fireflies; the other parts ensure that you'll bring a loaded rifle out there with you."

Magnet (8-9/99, pp.82-3) - "...refreshingly unpolished, yet richly detailed in terms of arrangements and overall aura to the point of approaching [Phil] Spector's vaunted 'wall of sound' standards..."

Mojo (Publisher) (4/03, p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Raw and riveting....Jim James's voice brims with comforting desolation, recalling any number of heartworn North American dreamers..."
