Performer Notes
  • Recording information: Rare Book Room (02/2009).
  • Considering the numerous releases by Deerhunter and its related side projects between late 2008 and 2009, and the relative high quality of all the material, it would be easy to assume front man Bradford Cox as some preternatural wellspring of musical inspiration. RAINWATER CASSETTE EXCHANGE, unlike the relatively sprawling double album epic MICROCASTLE/WEIRD ERA CONT., keeps a tight rein on quality. Following up on what was a banner year for the Atlanta-based collective, the EP offers an almost epigrammatic summation of Deerhunter's deconstructionist yet hooked-filled bliss pop--from sugary girl-group harmonies to noise-drenched garage rock.
Professional Reviews
Spin (p.84) - "[T]his EP's five songs venture in five different directs, from lullaby-with-tabla to codeine-doped Hawaiian ambience....Deerhunter's obsession with oblivion remains as intact as always."

Clash (magazine) - "Through sound one sees shapes and shades, always morphing; close your eyes and a lava lamp dances magic across the inside of your lids, your ears gently thwacked by the most wonderfully giddying branch of the indie-rock tree."
