  • Genre: Popular Music
  • Rammstein - Reise Reise [CD]

  • Personnel: B?rbel B?hler (oboe); Florian Ammon (programming).

  • Photographers: Olaf Heine; Alex Brunner.
  • One of the more unlikely success stories in music-business history, German heavy-metal collective Rammstein creates a totally uncompromising and wildly (some would say ridiculously) dramatic sound that combined elements of goth, industrial, Wagnerian opera, and progressive rock, with lyrics sung almost exclusively in German. Rammstein's concerts were even more over-the-top than the ensemble's recorded output, matching the performance art-inspired wackiness of Devo with the gross-out antics of Gwar.
  • On its fourth album, REISE, REISE, the group continues on its mission to be one of the heaviest, spookiest, and most bizzare acts in rock, delivering one bone crunching, sci-fi/monster-movie-like epic after another. The title track mates effects-laden My Bloody Valentine-style guitars with Dream Theater-like twists and turns, while "Morgenstern" features a chorus that sounds straight out of an Alpine beer hall operated by Freddy Krueger. The most significant break with the classic Rammstein sound, however, comes with "Los," which is driven by a surprisingly bluesy acoustic guitar. Often sounding less like a band and more like the disembodied product of a haunted, demon-possessed recording studio, REISE, REISE will undoubtedly please any fan of extreme music.

CMJ (p.16) - "[S]ung completely in Rammstein's native German, accompanied by harsh riffs that are punctuated by blips, samples and sprawling synths."

This album is a really good one, but if you have a strong taste in metal, this one may not be for you. The album is definitely not as heavy as previous works by this legendary band, but offers a softer industrial-rock sound. The themes that the album sing about are becoming less grotesque, although Mein Teil is still in keeping. Dalai Lama and Stein Um Stein are both sad, and Amerika and Moskau are both patriotic to the countries concerned. This is the album in which Rammstein stopped using orchestral samplers from Lorenz' keyboards and changed instead to recordings of actual string orchestras in the studio. The sound is so much deeper and beautiful this way. Especially noticable in Ohne Dich, where the band had so much more freedom in their melody. An album for those who enjoy a softer industrial sound.

This is one of my favourite Rammstein albums. I defy any heavy-metal fan not to get a kick out of 'Keine Lust'! It is a real pleasure to experience the potent musical blend that this band consistently expands upon, album after album. If you have never heard Rammstein before, I recommend trying their second album 'Sehnsucht' first (it is heavier), but 'Reise Reise' still has its charms.

Rammstein start to lose their edge with this offering. From the frenetic industrial pounding of previous CD's, this one comes off a bit weak. Although, as another reviewer said, it has some good sounds and some to offer, it is not really up to the pace and standard of the earlier work. Fans may find themselves a little disappointed with the CD overall.

After a bit of a break Rammstein have returned with the first half of a two part double album. This album starts off great with the hit Mein Teil, and although it manages to do a good job, the album could have been a lot better. The tracks blend together and the whole thing is over before you realise it. Still worth checking out though, as it has a lot to offer.
