  • Audio Remasterer: John Golden .
  • Originally released in 1997 and reissued a decade later on the venerable Touch & Go label, PROMISED WORKS collects the first two releases (FIGHT SONGS and MARSHMALLOWS) by vocalist/guitarist Brian McMahan in his post-Slint guise as the For Carnation. More meditative than the angular indie-rock of McMahan's former band, these tracks present his soft voice and crystalline guitar playing at its melancholy best, as revealed on the spare "Grace Beneath the Pines" and the delicate "On the Swing." Although there are moments of spiky energy on PROMISED WORKS, notably the moody "How I Beat the Devil," one of a few tracks to feature fellow Slint alum David Pajo, the compilation is largely a spare, pensive set.
Professional Reviews
The Wire (p.54) - "The first three tracks, taken from FIGHT SONGS, reveal the slow-paced, sparse beginnings of the group's early days....The songs are spacious, melancholy ballads..."
