  • Additional personnel: Marco Delmar (guitar); Bob Dewald (bass); Bruce "Kool Aid" Gardner (drums); Paul "DJ Unique" Howard (scratches); Bob, Mike, Brian, Bruce, Claude H., Samar, Marco, Bonita, Yolanda (background vocals).
  • Recorded at Bebop Productions, Rockville, Maryland. Originally released on Emigre (ECD 005).
  • All songs written by Michael Ivey.
  • Low-key and hypnotic, a pastiche of blues, country, rap, and funk, intellectual and introverted, Michael Ivey's music exists in its own universe. As Basehead, Ivey's 1992 debut is perhaps the most organic hip-hop ever laid on wax. PLAY WITH TOYS sounds like nothing that came before or since, and it instantly bewitched critics and college radio alike. Ivey's croon is barely eked out above the deliciously sleepy concoctions put down by his loosely gathered band of musicians. The gang frequently breaks character mid-song (at one point in "Brand New Day," a needle scratches off and a comic voice exhorts "get back to the friggin' song") as sampled voices lace the background. Basehead is not particularly concerned about getting to a destination, instead seemingly discovering the songs as they go along. It shouldn't work, but it does on a record that despite its laid-back nature, is constantly gripping, with its layers upon layers of groove.
