  • OLYMPIAN serves as a solid debut for Brit pop pioneers Gene. Lead vocalist Martin Rossiter's meticulously reflective lyrics and sonorous crooning often draw comparisons to both the Smiths and Morrissey's solo work but his output plays more like a love letter to Moz rather than outright theft. In addition to Rossiter's strong vocal offerings, the band also makes heavy use of violins to flesh out the melodies. Of course, one would be hard-pressed to find a stronger opening salvo than the track "Haunted by You."
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (6/29/95, p.45) - 3 Stars - Good - "...Though Gene come off like Badfinger to the Smiths' Beatles at this point, OLYMPIAN has plenty to offer of its own--including the potential for uniqueness further down the line."

Spin (6/95, pp.103-104) - 6 - Reasonably Good - "...Gene is better at being a surrogate Smiths than Morrissey is at being the icon of the alienated..."

Alternative Press (8/95, pp.87-88) - "...We've suffered a lot of New Smiths in the last few years, but Gene are the first to actually acknowledge the debt, take it to the limit, and then make it their own..."

Melody Maker (12/23-30/95, pp.66-67) - Ranked #23 on Melody Maker's list of 1995's `Albums Of The Year' - "...a rich and rocking debut stuffed with sweet soul guitars and gorgeous songs of lust and loss..."
