  • Subtitled EXCURSIONS INTO ALIEN TERRITORY, LUCKY THIRTEEN is a compilation of material Young recorded during the '80s, a time when he was roaming all over the musical map in search of inspiration. Some of the more unusual byways traveled by Young included Gary Numan-flavored electro-pop ("Pressure,") traditional country ("Once An Angel") and rockabilly ("Get Gone.") The furthest out Young's adventurousness took him was on TRANS, an album in which use of the term avant-garde is an understatement. Strapping himself into a vocoder and diving headfirst into a bank of Synclaviers, Young came up with songs such as "Sample And Hold" and "Transformer Man," which are about as far away as you can get from the crunching guitar and gritty playing most identifiable with his '70s work.
  • Despite the constant changing of musical gears that went on during the '80s, Neil Young's songwriting still maintained a cantankerous air. Whether he was deriding the selling out of musical ideals for commercial gain ("This Note's For You") or pointing out the failings of the late '60s counter-culture ("Hippie Dream,") Neil Young continued down his own path on all levels.
