  • Although he departed from this realm much too early, pianist/composer Don Grolnick left a legacy of great jazz. This documentation of one of his final performances finds Grolnick in the company of some of his closest musical friends. Michael and Randy Brecker, Don Alias, and Peter Erskine performed and recorded with the pianist countless times, never more wholeheartedly as they do here. Filling out the rest of the stellar ensemble is multi-instrumentalist Marty Ehrlich, trombonist Robin Eubanks, and bassist Peter Washington.
  • Grolnick's warm personality came through in every musical situation in which he participated. Here, compositions like the gliding "Heart Of Darkness" and the playful "Or Come Fog" display the pianist's penchant for marrying the traditions of the past with an expansive, contemporary approach, all with a tasteful touch that was his signature. The stirring ballad "Five Bars," yet another example of Grolnick's superior craftsmanship as a composer, features moving performances from Ehrlich on bass clarinet and Michael Brecker on tenor. The penultimate moment of the set occurs with the closing performance of the classic "What Is This Thing Called Love," featuring a stunning opening solo by Grolnick and his unforgettable arrangement that is greatly energized by percussionist Don Alias.
