Kate Wolf's second album--discounting BREEZES, a collaboration with songwriter Lionel Kilberg on which Wolf only wrote the music--was the last with her early backing group the Wildwood Flower. In fact, Kate and her group are joined on this album by another group, the bluegrass Cache Valley Drifters. As a result, 1977's LINES ON THE PAPER is probably Wolf's most countryish album.
There's a few of the introspective singer/songwriter ballads that dominate Wolf's later albums, but most of LINES ON THE PAPER is good-timey, ragged-but-right bluegrass-folk along the lines of classic Flying Burrito Brothers albums. The combination of Wolf's pensive lyrics and the bouncier-than-usual music sounds terrific. This is one of Kate Wolf's more engaging albums.
