In much the same way as their inspiration, the Nigerian activist musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the Brooklyn Afro-beat band Antibalas lace their music with a horn-and-percussion heavy, live-sounding production while using their insistent, interweaving rhythms as a platform for an overtly political message of struggle against oppression.
"Si, Se Puede" is a more-or-less direct lift from any one of countless Fela cuts, delivered with a no-nonsense Brooklyn muscularity, "El Machete" rides on a bubbling wave of elastic-sounding guitar, and the forceful R&B of "Battle of the Species" conjures memories of 1970s street funk. On "N.E.S.T.A." (which slyly co-opts Bob Marley's middle name as an acronym for the uplifting slogan Never Ever Submit To Authority), the slow, snaky rhythm sneaks up on the hips of the unwary, while "World War IV," recorded in 2000 and one of the two live cuts featured here, demonstrates how radically public opinion can shift by naming President Clinton and his Secretary of State Madeleine Albright as war criminals.
