Performer Notes
  • Liner Note Author: Gary Blailock.
  • The roots of the Rolling Stones have hardly been secrets. Drawing on a love of Chess Records, Chicago blues, Motown, bayou swamp blues, R&B, and early rock & roll, the Stones initially mimicked, and then later refined, re-formed, and reinvented their influences until they were arguably the greatest touring rock & roll band on the planet. So nothing on this compilation of songs the Stones have covered, played live or otherwise drawn from, should come as much of a surprise to anyone. Chuck Berry is here ("Come On"), and so is Howlin' Wolf ("The Red Rooster"), Sim Harpo ("I'm a King Bee"), Bo Diddley ("Walkin' and Talkin'"), Muddy Waters ("Mannish Boy"), Jimmy Reed ("Honest I Do"), Little Richard ("The Girl Can't Help It"), Buddy Holly ("Not Fade Away"), and a host of other old blues and rock & roll pioneers. It adds up to a pretty nice playlist full of absolute classic tracks that one doesn't have to use the Rolling Stones connection to enjoy. ~ Steve Leggett
