  • While the Welsh language itself, with its general rarity of exposure and seeming lack of vowels, can prove a formidable barrier to widespread interest in Welsh music, choral styles don't differ too greatly from one culture to another. Here, a selection of pieces from some of the various winners of the Eisteddfod (a Welsh choral competition) are presented, showcasing the interlocking harmonies of the male choirs on a range of basic formats. From religious pieces, to the classic farewell songs of the country, to love songs and pastorals, the choruses stick to a powerful delivery not unlike some of the better hymn-based English choruses. Accompaniment is limited to a harp or a piano at most, with the majority of choruses opting to go a cappella instead. The slow pace of most choral pieces will make the album a bit of a niche item, less likely to appeal to the average listener. For fans of choral music in general though, the skill displayed here makes it a worthwhile pick. ~ Adam Greenberg
