  • Following the critical acclaim of Dungen's 2004 outing TA DET LUGNT, Subliminal Records released this compilation of the Swedish psychedelic-rock collective's early work. Recorded between 1999 and 2001, DUNGEN consists of three lengthy tracks that shift from movement to movement under the guidance of vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Gustav Ejstes. Here folk, jazz, and rock mix with ambient passages, as flutes, sitars, and guitars fade in and out, resulting in a gentle jam-session vibe. Although the mood is mostly breezy, the disc does wander into more frenetic, rocked-out moments, most notably about midway through the nearly 19-minute "Midsommerbongen." With its ever-shifting sonic landscape, DUNGEN is the kind of record that warrants repeated listens, and those willing to take the trip will be rewarded with a unique, fascinating album.
