  • Ex-Sepultura member Max Cavalera and his ultra-heavy outfit Soulfly deliver their fifth album: 2005's DARK AGES. Cavalera and company show no signs of mellowing with age, and, even more impressively, bear not the slightest trace of the nu-metal and emo tendencies that seem to dominate the genre. Instead, Soulfly stick to extreme, intense, eardrum-shattering thrash metal full of pummeling bass and drum, throaty, visceral vocals, and guitars that pierce and churn like the world's most dangerous machinery. Everything from its title to its apocalyptic lyrics makes DARK AGES seem brooding and scary, yet the music is meticulously constructed, at times atmospheric, melodic, and even beautiful.
Professional Reviews
CMJ (No. 930, p.50) - "...An experimental savvy emerges in DARK AGES' quieter moments..."

Mojo (Publisher) (p.104) - 3 stars out of 5 - "DARK AGES fuses juggernaut punk-metal with found sounds....The evocative field recordings are matched by heartfelt songs."
