Performer Notes
  • Still performing well into their eighties, Boaters Bowlers & Bowties is a long-overdue major-label retrospective of the careers of three of the most successful exponents of U.K. trad jazz, clarinetist Acker Bilk, trumpet player Chris Barber, and trombonist Kenny Ball. Household names in the early 1960s, their toe-tapping brand of New Orleans-influenced jazz may have remained on the periphery of the music scene since the explosion of rock & roll, but it still remains the signature sound at quintessentially British events such as cricket matches at Lord's and the Henley Regatta, hence the album title, while their influence has recently been acknowledged by the likes of Van Morrison and Nick Lowe. This two-CD collection features 40 of their most popular pieces, from Bilk's surprise 1976 comeback "Aria" to Chris Barber's cover of Sidney Bechet's "Petite Fleur" to Kenny Ball's transatlantic hit "Midnight in Moscow." Alongside the many instrumentals, including Bilk's "Stranger on the Shore," which spent a one-time record 55 weeks on the U.K. chart, there are several tracks featuring vocals from Northern Irish singer Ottilie Patterson, such as the gospel-inspired "Down by the Riverside," the brass band standard "When the Saints Go Marching In" and the bluesy "Cottage Crawl," while the Paramount Jazz Band also provide backing on the likes of "That's My Home" and "Buona Sera." Although they never performed together in their heyday, they have regularly toured as a trio since the late '90s, and for any fans of vintage trad jazz yet to experience them live, this wonderfully nostalgic trip down memory lane should persuade them to don their finest bowler hat and bow tie next time they're in town. ~ Jon O'Brien
