By then, she was already long overdue. Earlier classics like "Paper Thin," "Lyte As A Rock" and "Poor Georgie" had gone ghetto-gold, earning her street respect long before she earned mainstream sales.
On BAD AS I WANNA B, her fifth album and her first since AIN'T NO OTHER, the 1993 disc that contained "Ruffneck," Lyte sports the same rugged lyrics and roughneck flow that enabled so many female MCs to follow in her footsteps. With producer-extraordinaire Jermaine Dupri at the helm, the hip-hop beats on BAD AS I WANNA B match Lyte's no-one-can-touch-me skills. But with a little less of the boyish attitude and a little more makeup, she is now the epitome of the female rapper. She knows the answer when she asks, "Have U ever ever in your long-livin' life seen a woman rock the mic like the one called the Lyte?," and she's not just boasting.
