  • This 1972 release captures the Art Ensemble, newly returned from a lengthy residency in Europe, in a kind of homecoming party. Comfortable on their home turf, the band performs a set of music more inspired and more intense than many of their later releases.
  • This 76-minute continuous concert gives Art Ensemble fans a very good idea of the group's early sound. Here, the Ensemble's compositions are exploratory, probing and most importantly, innovative. Drummer Don Moye had recently joined the band, complementing the skills of founding members Roscoe Mitchell, Lester Bowie, Joseph Jarmin and Malachi Favors. Segmented into four segued movements entitled "Duffvipels," "Checkmate," "Duatalty," and "Mata Kimasu," LIVE takes the listener on a journey into the vast and expansive territory of free jazz. The set's highlight is undoubtedly the humorous drunken march heard toward the finale.
Professional Reviews
The Wire (8/00, pp.40-1) - "...A remarkable representation of [their] interest in their African heritage, with everyone responsible for the polyrhythmic percussive ambiance, horns alternately symbolizing animals, storytelling griots, or the internal voices of the spirit..."
