Cole Porter's celebrated musical Anything Goes opened on Broadway in 1934, a decade before the original Broadway cast album became a popular record format. No such album commemorated Anything Goes in either its initial New York or London productions, but individual members of the casts did make recordings of songs from the show, and they form the basis for this compilation. Ethel Merman, who starred on Broadway, recorded "I Get a Kick Out of You" and "You're the Top" in 1934 for Brunswick Records. In 1947, she cut a version of "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" for her Decca Records album Ethel Merman: Songs She Has Made Famous. Merman's co-star, William Gaxton, didn't make any studio recordings, but he did sing "You're the Top" on radio in 1935, introduced by Vinton Freedley, the show's producer. The popular quartet the Foursome also appeared in the Broadway production, and billed as the Anything Goes Foursome, they recorded "There'll Always Be a Lady Fair" and "The Gypsy in Me" for an RCA Victor single in 1934. In the U.K., the British Columbia label came the closest to making an original cast recording, bringing stage stars Jeanne Aubert, Jack Whiting, Sydney Howard, and the Four Admirals into the studio to cut six songs for release on two discs in 1935: "I Get a Kick Out of You" by Aubert; "All Through the Night" by Whiting; "You're the Top" by Aubert and Whiting (the notorious version that contains a lyric praising Italian dictator Benito Mussolini); "Anything Goes" and "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" by Aubert and the Four Admirals; and "Be Like the Bluebird" by Whiting, preceded by spoken dialogue between Whiting and Howard. Porter himself also recorded several songs from the show for RCA Victor in 1934-35: "You're the Top," "Anything Goes," and "Be Like the Bluebird." All of these stray recordings are gathered together on this collection, which then adds vintage recordings of four Porter songs not written for Anything Goes but interpolated into it in later productions at one time or another: Merman's 1935 Liberty Music Shop Records recording of "It's De-Lovely," which she sang in the musical Red, Hot and Blue!; Frances Langford's 1936 Decca recording of "Easy to Love," which she sang in the film Born to Dance; Yvonne Printemps and Pierre Fresnay's 1936 HMV recording of "Goodbye, Little Dream, Goodbye" from the British musical O Mistress Mine; and a 1940 aircheck of "Friendship" from the musical DuBarry Was a Lady sung by Merman and Bert Lahr, that show's stars. While these tracks are all mixed up on the compilation, and the annotations are misleading, the material itself is valuable from both a historical perspective and as a listening experience. ~ William Ruhlmann
