Performer Notes
  • Akron/Family: Seth Olinsky (vocals, guitars, banjo, accordion, melodica, organ); Miles Seaton (vocals, guitars, melodica, piano, bass instrument); Ryan Vanderhoof (vocals, guitars); Dana Janssen (vocals, piano, drums, percussion).
  • Discovered, signed, and produced by Swans' Michael Gira (who also mentored Devendra Banhart), this Brooklyn-based foursome has released one weird stunner of a post-folk album. Acoustic guitars back lead vocalist Ryan Vanderhoof as he explores the nature of perception in a rich voice that sustains notes until they reverberate into nothingness, the rest of the band periodically diving after him in beer-hall harmony. Each Akron/Family member plays a slew of different instruments (including banjo, melodica, glockenspiel, "bric-a-brac," and "orchestral computer sentiments"); and songs fold into and out of themselves, while maintaining a sense of organic wholeness.
  • "Before and Again" could qualify for a Wes Anderson film soundtrack, with its mix of hipster outre qualities and cozy sweetness, while "Italy" takes that sound and elevates it to anthemic heights just to watch it collapse. Here Vanderhoof's vocal splits the difference between Radiohead and Sigur Ros, while cymbals crash like pounding surf in the windswept distance. In whatever new direction the group's sound may wander, nothing ever feels abrasive or out of place. This is music as shoes for traveling into new dimensions, and comfortable enough to keep on for days.
