The only child of the actor Michael Gough and actress-cum-journalist Diana Graves, Simon Gough was born in 1942. He was brought up in France, Italy and Spain by a number of surrogate parents, as well as his own, and spent much of his childhood in brutal boarding establishments until he was finally expelled from his last school for trying to blow it up. He has revelled in freedom ever since - and in changes of career, from washing up to writing for the BBC, to acting, to selling the finest antiquarian books in London and Norfolk,(at which he excelled by accepting a modest loss on every volume sold). The White Goddess: An Encounter is the first of two books concerning the extraordinary events surrounding his relationship with his great-uncle Robert Graves; the second is nearing completion.
"Extraordinary... an almost mythic, dangerous tale of love and worship." Libby Purves, BBC radio 4 "A tender, observant record... Impassioned." The Observer "Totally charming and utterly intriguing, The White Goddess: An Encounter is the memoirs of Simon Gough told in the form of a novel. You sense that this is a very special book, drawing on Simon's life memories. His voice is warm and intimate as he carries you through his rites of passage, bringing with it a feeling of past values and deep respect for the written word. The narrative engenders compassion, nostalgia and laughter and also admiration for the integrity with which it is written. Last but not least it gives us fascinating insight into the private life of Robert Graves as seen through the eyes of a boy." Red magazine
