When Baltimore corporate attorney Val Covington decides to start her own practice and reduce the stress in her life, she doesn't expect to become caught up in a seemingly hopeless death penalty appeal or to fall in love with a man who has a tragedy in his past, not to mention the possibility of taking on the responsibility of a teenaged girl. But all of this and more results from her decision to simplify her life. The suspense is low-key but builds steadily as the countdown to the execution nears. Sex scenes between Val and Rob Smith, her new love, are fittingly steamy, but her emotional struggles with their relationship seem a bit forced. Loose ends are tied up, sometimes too readily. James Jenner reads with warmth and emotional honesty, handling the myriad characters well; his narration is not overdone, and he captures the emotional moments.
