Reader George Guidall's first venture into the popular Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus series is a success. In this gritty thriller, Peter reluctantly takes a busman's holiday to New York at the request of his half-brother Jonathan, whose family is distraught over the execution-style slaying of his brother-in-law, Ephraim. To make matters worse, Ephraim's 15-year-old niece, Shaynda, who was with him for the day, is missing. As he begins to investigate, our L.A. police lieutenant unhappily finds that, unlike Jonathan, very few people appreciate his assistance-especially Shaynda's immediate family and the NYPD. Peter is further dismayed to discover a link to Chris Donatti, a mob-connected pornographer whom he once put behind bars. Unfortunately, the novel becomes disjointed at times with its large cast of characters and periodic switch to the first-person perspective of Donatti's girlfriend (with corresponding narration by Julia Gibson). Despite these drawbacks, absorbing portrayals of Peter's family life and the Jewish community make this a solid purchase for the many public libraries with Kellerman fans.-Beth Farrell, Portage Cty.
