Gr 9 Up-Seventeen-year-old Hannah is the daughter of a single mom; consequently, she is often responsible for her younger brother. Colin's parents are train wrecks-constantly arguing, drinking, and living in denial. With Colin leaving for college and Hannah staying behind for her senior year, she thinks all she needs is a perfect, romantic moment to be sure of her feelings before she can declare her love for him as he has for her. She creates an opportunity when she finds a map and picture of his family's abandoned lake home. She lies to her mother and convinces Colin to go away with her for a weekend without knowing their destination. Little does Hannah know that spending time at the house will force him to confront long-repressed memories of a terrible night when his older brother, Jack, killed a girl and that when Jack realized that Colin was a witness, he tried to drown him, too. A psychotic breakdown brings a violent, disoriented Colin to life. When he tries to harm Hannah, it's her fear, wits, and a little luck that keep her alive. While the secondary characters are underdeveloped, this is a different kind of love story with a strange, dark twist.-Joanne K.
