About the Author

Shane Frederick has been writing about sports since he worked for his high school newspaper in Wisconsin. He currently covers college hockey and other sports for The Free Press newspaper in Mankato, Minnesota, and has won awards for his stories from the Associated Press and the Society of Professional Journalists. He is also the author of several sports books, including The Best of Everything Football Book and The Ultimate Guide to Pro Football Teams. A graduate of the University of St. Thomas, Shane lives in Mankato with his wife, Sara, their three children, Ben, Jack, and Lucy, and their dog, Molly.

Gr 6-9-Regardless of their sport, students will find much to appreciate in these titles. Each volume starts with a brief introduction about the importance of training for continued skill-building and uses real-life examples of Olympic champions and professional players who embody a dedication to proper training. Clear, step-by-step instructions for drills that target specific parts of the body are accompanied by photographs of a male or female teen performing that exercise. Nutrition explains how carbs, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water work within the body to release energy. It offers healthful options for meals and snacks, and guidelines on what to eat before, during, and after a strenuous workout.
