Grace is fascinated by the wolves in the woods behind her house; one yellow-eyed wolf in particular. Every winter, she watches him but every summer, he disappears. Sam leads two lives. In winter he stays in the frozen woods, with the protection of the pack.n summer, he has a few precious months to be human ...until the cold makes him shift back again. When Grace and Sam finally meet they realize they can't bear to be apart. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human - or risk losing himself, and Grace, for ever

Stiefvater leaves the faeries of Lament and Ballad for a lyrical tale of alienated werewolves and first love. For years, Grace has been fascinated by the yellow-eyed wolf that saved her from its pack when she was a child. Sam, bitten by a wolf as a boy, is that wolf. Long obsessed with each other at a distance, they finally meet after a wolf hunt (inspired by the apparent death of a local teen) sends a wounded and temporarily human Sam into Grace's arms. Their young love is facilitated by Grace's hands-off parents ("Once upon a time, I would've leaped at the rare opportunity of curling up with Mom on the couch. But now, it sort of felt like too little, too late," Grace muses), but threatened by two linked crises: the fact that Sam will soon lose the ability to become human and the instability of a new lycanthrope. Stiefvater skillfully increases the tension throughout; her take on werewolves is interesting and original while her characters are refreshingly willing to use their brains to deal with the challenges they face. Ages 13-up. (Aug.) Copyright 2009 Reed Business Information.

Gr 9 Up-Grace, 17, loves the peace and tranquility of the woods behind her home. It is here during the cold winter months that she gets to see her wolf-the one with the yellow eyes. Grace is sure that he saved her from an attack by other wolves when she was nine. Over the ensuing years he has returned each season, watching her with those haunting eyes as if longing for something to happen. When a teen is killed by wolves, a hunting party decides to retaliate. Grace races through the woods and discovers a wounded boy shivering on her back porch. One look at his yellow eyes and she knows that this is her wolf in human form. Fate has finally brought Sam and Grace together, and as their love grows and intensifies, so does the reality of what awaits them. It is only a matter of time before the winter cold changes him back into a wolf, and this time he might stay that way forever. Told from alternating points of view, the narrative takes a classic Romeo & Juliet plot and transforms it into a paranormal romance that is beautiful and moving. Readers will easily identify with the strong, dynamic characters. The mythology surrounding the wolf pack is clever and so well written that it seems perfectly normal for the creatures to exist in today's world. A must-have that will give Bella and Edward a run for their money.-Donna Rosenblum, Floral Park Memorial High School, NY Copyright 2009 Reed Business Information.

This book was mesmerising - I bought it for my daughter and thought I'd take a peek before I gave it to her. Well....that peek evolved into a mad reading binge. Finished it in one night, honestly couldn't put it down. Now I have to buy her another copy, as I'd like to keep this one (-:

Beautifully and craftily written Maggie takes supernatural writing to a whole new level. Not only does the structure and plot line flow perfectly, but the characters have soul and maintain their honesty until the very last page. It explores a love so pure, honest and untouchable that it destroys anything we (humans) believe to be love. The reader is taken on a journey, from beginning to end, and not at one moment enticed to leave that magical path. A world of mystical werewolves and level-headed mortals, who wouldn't want to fall in love?

Maggie Stiefvater did so well in writing this book Shiver. Before I read it, I heard a lot of people saying that it's like a twilight copycat but it's not at all! I believe that the only thing remotely similar about this book to the twilight novel is that there are werewolves in it! This is a truly unique story that will keep you reading until the very last page.

Shiver is like poetry, and it speaks to your soul more than your mind. I dont think you can ever love like the main characters do, but this books make you believe that you could. I love this novel. I love how powerful it is and how it breaks social convention by totally jumping the whole 'courting phase' in relationships...Sam and Grace are sharing a bed from the start of their human/human relationship. READ THIS BOOK. Read it and you will love it...I dont think i've ever read a book that is so lyrical and uses such powerful imagery. It really is like poetry, but the kind that you can understand because its exactly what you would want to think and feel and know.

I really loved this book. Ok it's a young adult love story, but this was just so much better written than alot of the other YA books out there. Plus it is nice to see a female lead who doesn't instantly become submissive and pathetic when she falls in love with the male lead! The story of Grace, trying to save Sam and keep him in her world, is funny, sad and very very romantic. Highly recommended!

Shiver was a real page turner... I couldn’t put it down and even stayed up all night reading it, can’t wait for the next book to see how Grace and Sam’s lives turn out. It’s one of those books that you can read over and over and it still be a page turner. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys vampire and werewolf books.

Wow. What an intense novel.

Wolves and Winter and summer and Rilke and the intersection between the wild and the human...

It's a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It's a tragedy.

It made me cry, the inevitability of Winter, of endings...

It's so full of observations, both the main characters so painfully observant of everyone around them.

It's funny and lush and musical...

I cannot find my 16 year old daughter as she is reading Shiver and only started it today.
