Gerry Gerhard was born in Southsea, England in 1931. He attended Portsmouth Grammar School and then St John's College at Southsea, joining the navy aged 16 but was invalided out with tuberculosis. He bought an ex Power boat MTB where his son was born, converting and living on it (she is shown in the book). Gerry worked as a centre lathe turner at several engineering firms, finally emigrating to West Australia in 1968. He worked at a marine engineering firm and then became self-employed working on construction sites all over the country. Gerry has always had a love of ships and all things nautical; now retired and enjoying life, he is an avid traveller having visited 94 countries.
