For four novels, Clive Cussler has charted the exploits of the Oregon, a clandestine spy ship completely dilapidated on the outside, but on the inside packed with sophisticated weaponry and intelligence-gathering equipment. Captained by the rakish, one-legged Juan Cabrillo and manned by a crew of former military and spy personnel, it is a private enterprise, available for any government agency that can afford it - and now Cussler sends the Oregon on its most extraordinary mission yet. The crew has just completed a top-secret mission against Iran in the Persian Gulf, when they come across a cruise ship adrift in the sea. Hundreds of bodies litter its deck, and as Cabrillo tries to determine what happened, explosions rack the length of the ship. Barely able to escape with his own life and that of the liner's sole survivor, Cabrillo finds himself plunged into a mystery as intricate and as perilous as any he has ever known, and pitted against a cult with monstrously lethal plans for the human race - plans he may already be too late to stop.

Reviews

Cussler and coauthor Du Brul (Skeleton Coast) lurch through Cussler's latest high-tech fantasy, dropping dozens of subplots into a blender and printing the result. The chief threat? Bad guys intent on sterilizinghalf the world use a trendy zero population /family planning group as cover. Into the breach steps Juan Cabrillo, his supership Oregon, and his loyal cast of special-ops wizards. Did I mention Noah's Ark? So does Cussler. Readers will ask for him by name, so buy accordingly. In the dependably entertaining if less than top-notch fifth Oregon Files thriller from bestseller Cussler and Du Brul (after Skeleton Crew), Capt. Juan Cabrillo, who heads the Corporation, a covert military company for hire, and the multifaceted crew of the Oregon, a high-tech ship disguised to look like a tramp steamer, take on a group known as the Responsivists. The Responsivists publicly espouse a program of global population control, but are secretly planning a devastating attack on the human race utilizing a virulent virus found aboard an ancient ship that may be Noah's Ark. The authors are up to their usual high standards when in fighting mode, though the chief villain, the doctor who heads the Responsivists, falls short of Juan's billing as "the single-most-evil human being I have ever met." Readers may wish that next time out the bad guys put up more of a struggle. (June) Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.
