About the Author

Daniel Mason received his bachelor's degree in biology at Harvard in 1998 and spent a year studying malaria on the Thailand-Myanmar border, where much of his debut, The Piano Tuner, was written. He studied medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

In October 1886, London piano tuner Edgar Drake begins a strange journey. The British army sends him to the jungles of Burma to tune the rare piano of a mysterious doctor who is also involved in delicate diplomatic negotiations with native princes. His trip to and stay in Burma exposes Drake to the exotic sights and sounds of the Far East, especially the music of its people. He also finds himself in the middle of colonial political intrigue as Britain expands its influence in Southeast Asia. Mason's lyrical tale, with its solid grounding in historical fact, engulfs the listener in the flavor and texture of the late-19th-century British imperial world. Reader Richard Matthews nicely brings the story to life. Very highly recommended for all audio collections.-Stephen L. Hupp, West Virginia Univ.
