Reviews

PreS-Gr 1‘Penguin Pete and his son Tim start the day with a walk in their icy, polar world, engaging in a snowball fight and taking a ride on a dogsled. Snow begins to fall, and as the wind howls, Tim looks up to find that his dad is nowhere in sight. Soon a friendly seal offers to take him for a dip in the frigid water, and after a brief swim he returns to land and awaits the reunion with his father. The short, choppy sentences make for a quick, yet uneven read. Tim's statement to Pete that ``I didn't think you were ever going to find me'' seems out of place, since the tiny creature spent most of his ``lost'' time swimming contentedly with a seal. Watercolors applied to wet paper create a soft, snowy atmosphere‘a perfect setting for the story. The penguins, however, don't rise above the look of fuzzy stuffed animals. They appear stiff and their facial expressions rarely vary enough to convey personality or mood. In all, a disappointing effort.‘Lynn Cockett, Nutley Public Library, NJ
