About the Author

Jim Saunders from Knighton, Powys was the Offa's Dyke Path Officer for 18 years and his wealth of knowledge and experience is captured in his first book celebrating the marvel of Offa's Dyke. A keen photographer, his photographs have been published by the Independent, Michelin Green Guides, Ordnance Survey, the Travel and Leisure magazine, Home and Country magazine, the Countryside Council for Wales and various local newspapers and magazines. He has produced and sold thousands of postcards of landscape and natural history, made to order for local businesses, and as a freelance photographer, he is kept busy taking new photos, both speculatively and to order.

Reviews

The Welsh border country must surely rank as without equal in terms of its wonderful rural landscape and its historical associations. King Offa of Mercia was responsible for its construction 1200 years ago and the work involved demanded incredible skill and stamina. This beautifully produced coffee-table book is intended as both a guide and a celebration of the long-distance footpath which now follows the 177 miles of Dyke from Chepstow in the South to Prestatyn in the North. As a dyke officer with eighteen years experience, Jim Saunders has a wealth of knowledge to share with readers. He is also a professional photographer and has illustrated the book with a generous selection of colour photographs. There have been a number of publications guiding the long distance walkers along the route, but, invaluable as guides are, this volume offers so much more. Although I have described it as a coffee-table book it is worth taking an extra large rucksack if you are contemplating such a hike in order to accommodate it. It is very much a book for armchair travellers as well. As I turned the pages, I was overcome by nostalgia as I recalled long hikes over sections of the Dyke two decades ago.
