About the Author

Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., is widely regarded as one of the world's leading researchers in the fields of personality, social psychology, and developmental psychology. She is the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, and has won nine lifetime achievement awards for her research. She addressed the United Nations on the eve of their new global development plan and has advised governments on educational and economic policies. Her work has been featured in almost every major national publication, and she has appeared on Today, Good Morning America, and 20/20. She lives with her husband in Palo Alto, California. Mindset is "an established set of attitudes held by someone," says the Oxford American Dictionary. It turns out, however, that a set of attitudes needn't be so set, according to Dweck, professor of psychology at Stanford. Dweck proposes that everyone has either a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. A fixed mindset is one in which you view your talents and abilities as... well, fixed. In other words, you are who you are, your intelligence and talents are fixed, and your fate is to go through life avoiding challenge and failure. A growth mindset, on the other hand, is one in which you see yourself as fluid, a work in progress. Your fate is one of growth and opportunity. Which mindset do you possess? Dweck provides a checklist to assess yourself and shows how a particular mindset can affect all areas of your life, from business to sports and love. The good news, says Dweck, is that mindsets are not set: at any time, you can learn to use a growth mindset to achieve success and happiness. This is a serious, practical book. One of the most important books I have ever read. It opens your eyes how our mind works. My 18 year old daughter is reading it now and it is already helpful for her to see how she approaches learning and she sees how other people function, just so revealing. I wish I had read this when I was young, would have opened my mind to so many things and improved my learning and my life. Gave the book to a friend and she is just blown over on what she has learned about herself, her way of dealing with the world and her relationships.A MUST READ

This is such an interesting read. Love it! I can identify with the findings and it has such great impact on children and how we treat them. I also like the insights on mindsets of business leaders. Its a very interesting take. However, I wish more time in the book was dedicated at addressing the skills on how we can change mindsets. Overall, a very good read.

This book is mind blowing. As an early childhood teacher and a parent I have changed that way I praise children. It has also encouraged me to reflect on my own upbringing and the different mindsets I was exposed too. Highly recommended to parents, teachers and any managers.

How not to praise your children - and how to coach and empower children, adolescents and workmates to achieve their best. I think intuitively some of us understand the significance of praising effort rather than achievement, that praising talents and achievement can paralyse many children, grown ups too. Carol Dweck and her team have teased out why this is so. Important research that is presented here in an easy to read format - essential reading for every teacher and parent. Read and discover for yourself.

A fantastic book - affirming and challenging at the same time. It has made me re-evaluate how I praise children and I'm now much more aware of articulating for children that effort, hard work and practice are the keys to learning. I wish I had known the theory behind this book when my children were younger.

The philosophy and ideas in this book are great, and a real release from the 'fixed' mindset so inherent in our culture. I would have liked it better with ideas and exercises to transfer to real life, but still worth buying.

This is poriving to be a really interesting book and quite helpful. I bought it to help me help my gifted son to get his marks back on track at school. It appears that I have been doing a few things wrong and this book is steering me in the (hopeuflly) right direction. It has also been useful to me in gaining a fresh viewpoint on how my Mindset is and challenign my beliefs - I seem to sit firmly in the two different camps, depending on the issues.

I am only half way through so far, but already I have used the information to help motivate my son and have seen a response from him.
