Reviews

If there is one word I had to use to describe this book it would be; Stunning!!! The book supplies you with everything you will need to know to create this amazing beautiful lace designs. Before the chapters of the book start you get a history of Shetland Lace Shawls. They include beautiful historic pictures. Chapter 1 is the apprentice pieces. This chapter has step-by-step instructions for knitting five mini shawls so that you can practice the lace knitting techniques you learn. Each of these can be knitted in any thickness of yarn while you get used to the techniques. Chapter 2 is the pattern section. You can choose from any of the 15 shawl patterns to start. With learning all the techniques in chapter 1 you are capable of making any of the shawls in the book. Each of the patterns has full instructions with photographs and charts. And although you have learnt all the techniques the patterns are also marked with the concentration level so you can choose one of the easier designs or one of the more difficult. I can honestly say that each of the designs are amazing. If you are used to making holes etc. in knitting patterns I am sure these are something you could achieve. The book even says beginners can have a go. Elizabeth has brought her knowledge together and put it in a format that is easy to follow and takes the fright out of Shetland Lace Shawls. Elizabeth also gives you all the knowledge you will need to know so that you can take the techniques and use them to create your own designs. How special would that be to create your own unique design for yourself or as a present for someone special. This is a special book full of amazing designs and superb instructions. There are six pages giving the history of the Shetland lace knitting to put these patterns required for fifteen full-sized Shetland lace knitting to out these patterns in context followed by five 'apprentice piece' shawls patterns in the next chapter. The large shawls are all beautifully photographed and there are charts for knitting. Chapter 3 looks at the core techniques including equipment, yarn choice, reading charts, joining yarn, dealing with mistakes, dressing a shawl. There is a good range of different shawl shapes plus one 'heirloom' set for a baby with dress, petticoat, bonnet and booties. This is a good book for a keen and experienced lace knitter. * Yarn Maker * Here Elizabeth Lovick demonstrates the delicate beauty of Shetland lace. Her patterns are for the kind of garments that become heirlooms. The babys gown, petticoat and hat would be perfect for a christening; and for that day in the furutre when you baby has a baby of their own. Locik has made Shetland lace accessible and she's made sure to include patterns for every level of knitter. There's a chapter about what to do if you go wrong while knitting lace and how to put your mistakes right, and even a chapter about how best to wear your finished shawl * Love to Make *
